Chapter 10
“How was your night?” Lucy asked as Devin sat at his desk. “Did you like the scallops? He was so worried that you wouldn't.”
“Oh, so you helped him decide?”
“He wanted to make some kind of pasta since you love noodles. He was actually going to make yakisoba, but I said you needed to broaden your food horizons.”
“What? My horizons are broad!” Devin protested.
“Bullshit. Anyway, he said he had some other kind of surprise for you but he wouldn't tell me. What was it?”
He beamed at her. “I taught Alex to play Battle Monsters,” he said with pride. “He asked me to.”
“Oh, good! Does he know he's dating a child?”
“Shut up. He had fun and he's actually pretty good at it.”
“Not hard to play a game made for 8 year olds.”
“I'm choosing to ignore you. Since I won two out of the three rounds, he's taking me out again tonight.”
Lucy rolled her eyes. “He'd take you out every night if he could, I think.”
“Probably, but I like the feeling of having won it,” he answered with a shrug.
She dropped a file on his desk. “See if you can win a raincheck, buddy. We have to go on a stakeout tonight. Looks like Night Watcher's info checks out.”
“Don't call him that,” Devin groaned.
“Why not? It's what he calls himself.”
“I know but it's a stupid name and it gives him legitimacy. I don't want him to think he's actually working with us.”
She shrugged. “He kind of is, though.”
“Well, quit it. We're trying to get him too.”
“So you don't want to catch two of the biggest pushers of Solar Flare in the area? Cool. I'll let the captain know. I'm sure he'll support you completely.”
Devin groaned and sunk in his chair. “I do,” he said at last. “That's more important.”
“I knew you'd feel that way!”
Devin fished his phone out of his pocket and unlocked it, heading straight for the text messages. Hey, can we do a different night? Being pulled to do a stakeout tonight.
Of course, came the response a few minutes later. Your work takes priority.
It shouldn't.
There will be other dinners. Besides, I couldn't stay out late tonight anyway. Meeting in the morning. How about tomorrow evening?
Depends on how long the stakeout goes.
I understand. Best of luck.
Thanks.
Devin stared down at his phone. Alex said he understood but it didn't suck any less.
